Coin appraisals in Tampa

How a Tampa coin appraisal works.

An appraisal is a value estimate. We weigh series, date, mint mark, condition, and today's market against each other to land on a fair range, not a guess.

The call is a starting point. For a verified number, we look at the coin in person. For five-figure pieces, certified grading from PCGS or NGC usually pays for itself.

What we look at

What we actually look at.

Coin value isn't one number. It's a stack of inputs. Here are the four we cover on every Tampa appraisal call.

01

Series

Series, denomination, country. A Walking Liberty half draws different demand than a buffalo nickel from the same year.

02

Date and mint

Year and mint mark. Key dates and rare mints can take a $20 coin and turn it into a $2,000 coin.

03

Condition

Wear, scratches, harsh cleaning, toning. The Sheldon 70-point scale tells the whole story.

04

Market

Where spot is sitting for bullion. Where collector demand is sitting for the numismatic side.

How it works

From phone call to a real number.

01

Dial in

Coins or photos in front of you. Year, mint mark, and a quick read on condition gets us started.

02

We ID it

Series, date, mint mark. If you're not sure what you're looking at, we walk you through it on the call.

03

We share the range

A fair value range based on what you've described and where the market sits today.

04

You take it from there

Sell, hold, send off for slabbing, or just keep the info. Up to you.

A note on appraisals

Phone range versus written appraisal.

A phone call gives you a verbal range based on what you describe. Good enough to decide whether to sell, hold, or dig deeper.

For insurance, probate filings in Hillsborough County, or estate work, you usually need a written appraisal from a qualified third party. We'll tell you when that step is worth the cost.

Common questions

Things people ask before calling.

Q.01 Is there a charge for the appraisal call? +

No charge for the phone call. Verbal ranges are free. Formal written appraisals for insurance or Hillsborough County probate may carry a flat fee depending on how big the collection is.

Q.02 How accurate is a verbal appraisal? +

A verbal range is a solid starting point. The exact number lands in person, on a scale, under a loupe. For five-figure coins, PCGS or NGC grading gives the most defensible baseline.

Q.03 Do I need an appraisal before selling? +

Not really. The same call can cover the appraisal, a value range, and what we'd offer if you wanted to sell. Most Tampa Bay sellers handle the whole thing in one conversation.

Q.04 What if the coin turns out to be common? +

That's still useful information. Knowing a coin is common rather than rare saves you time and false hope. We tell you straight either way.

Q.05 Can you appraise a whole inherited collection? +

Yes. Big collections take longer on the call. For full estates coming out of South Tampa or Davis Islands we usually book a sit-down visit. We'll match the approach to the scope.
